The idea that's gaining more scientific agreement is that we didn't domesticate wild wolves and transform them into dogs, but instead these clever canines used their social networking skills to domesticate themselves and made humans their meal ticket. Simply by being relaxed around humans, they had access to more food, and good food and that kind of gave them an advantage. The ones that were more co-operative around humans had more offspring. That means the next generation then was at birth already more co-operative, more relaxed. And so that's the kind of start of this whole process, and that's what we call self-domestication. So perhaps it wasn't survival of the fittest, more like survival of the friendliest that braided the fates of our two species together. And on that journey, these canines changed in both body and temperament.。
